August 2018 was Ron’s 21st consecutive Convention, as he has never missed one since his initiation into P.A.D. at Alden Chapter (SUNY Buffalo) on April 12, 1978. Ron has served as a presenter, co-chair or resource person on over 30 convention committees and workshops. He had the honor and privilege of chairing the 60th Biennial Convention in Scottsdale, AZ from July 30 to August 2, 2014. He was elected to the Tribunal at the 61st Biennial Convention in Arlington, Virginia and re-elected at the Lexington, KY convention on August 11, 2018.
Ron is a recently retired Confidential Law Clerk to a New York State Supreme Court Justice in Lockport, NY. Prior to taking that job 18 years ago, he served Niagara County as an Assistant District Attorney for 18 years, the last ten as Chief of Homicide prosecutions. He is admitted to practice in New York, the Western District of NY Federal Court, and the United States Supreme Court. Ron moved the admission of his PAD colleagues at the U.S. Supreme Court at "PAD Day" in both 2013 and 2014, where they were met by PAD member Associate Justices Alito, Ginsburg and Sotomayor following the ceremony.
Brother Winter has served his community in various ways. He was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Niagara County Community College (NCCC), is a past President of the Niagara County Legal Aid Society, Inc. as well as a past President of the Bar Association of the Tonawandas. He is currently a Director of the Bar Association of Niagara County (NY) while serving as Secretary of that Board. Ron is also a member of the Adjunct Faculty of the State University at Buffalo Law School where he is an instructor of Trial Technique. He has been a guest lecturer at the Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy, and the New York State Bar Association Criminal Law Section. Ron is also an exempt volunteer firefighter and an 18-gallon blood donor.
For 35 of his 41 years of membership, Ron has served Phi Alpha Delta in the following International capacities: Executive Secretary (now Director of Law School Chapter Operations) and simultaneously as Pre-Law Director; District Justice (twice); Regional Coordinator; Associate Tribune (3 previous terms); Board Member-At-Large (2 terms); International Secretary (3 terms); International Advocate; International Vice Justice (2 terms) and most recently as International Justice for the 2012-2014 biennium. Brother Winter then served the Fraternity as Chair of the International Advisory Board (IAB), a body consisting of all past International Justices of Phi Alpha Delta. He has also served as Board Liaison to both the Pre-Law Advisory Council (PLAC) and the Alumni Advisory Council (AAC). Brother Winter has attended 22 PAD Pre-Law Conferences where he presides over the Mock Trial Tournament, and has also visited all 33 districts in the Fraternity.
"The Idge" has also served at the chapter level as Marshal and Justice of Alden Chapter, and as Justice of Buffalo Alumni Chapter and, currently, Justice of Niagara Frontier Alumni Chapter, which he founded in 2003. Ron is a recipient of both the Alex A. Hotchkiss Outstanding Law School Chapter Justice Award in 1981 while at Alden Chapter, and the Stan Jones Outstanding District Justice Award in 2003 (District XIX). On August 6, 2016, Brother Winter became just the 25th PAD member ever selected to the Distinguished Service Chapter, the Fraternity's highest honor. Election to the DSC is by unanimous, secret ballot of the IEB.
Ron is married to Joan, a retired middle school English teacher. They have two daughters, Rachel and Lydia, and reside in Lockport, NY. Rachel joined the Pre-Law Chapter at SUNY Geneseo in Fall 2014, and graduated from there Magna Cum Laude in May 2016. She resides in Brooklyn and works in Manhattan with an advertising firm. Lydia attended college to study early childhood development and recently completed an Associates degree from NCCC. Joan has attended 15 conventions, every one since 1990 (after she and Ron were married in 1989). Their daughters have attended 11 conventions each. For them, PAD is truly a family affair.
