We are pleased to honor the accomplishments and life of Phi Alpha Delta’s first African American Initiate – Earl Langdon Neal (Campbell Chapter). #BlackHistoryMonth

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1949, Brother Earl enrolled in the University of Michigan’s law school. At the time there were only four African American students in his class, and Phi Alpha Delta had yet to remove its racial membership restrictions. These restrictions were finally removed during the Fraternity’s 28th Biennial Convention in 1950 and Earl was initiated the following year on December 3, 1951 making fraternity history.

Over the course of his life Earl would epitomize Phi Alpha Delta’s ideals of public and community service and lead a notable career of change, resilience, justice, and equality.
