As we approach the one-year milestone of the pandemic—with over 500,000 COVID-19 related deaths in the United States, including the tragic passing of fellow Phi Alpha Delta members—we must confront the additional shared trauma of the recent uptick in hate crimes against the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Following reports that COVID-19 originated in China, a significant rise in hate speech occurred attributing the origin of COVID-19 to the AAPI community. It has also led to an increase of racist, violent acts against the AAPI community at large. The Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) published a report on this increased trend and stated, "Across the country, there were more than 2,500 reports of anti-Asian hate incidents related to COVID-19 between March and September 2020. And this number understates the actual number of anti-Asian hate incidents because most incidents are not reported." Phi Alpha Delta vehemently condemns all violent acts and all forms of hate speech against members of the AAPI community. As Phi Alpha Delta members, we share and advance our core values of compassion, courage, diversity, innovation, integrity, professionalism, and service. Therefore, we stand in solidarity with the AAPI community to reject hate. These resources will help us become educated, continue to move our Fraternity towards anti-racism, and gain a better understanding of the AAPI experience: PBS: Asian Americans and The Conversation: The long history of US racism against Asian Americans, from 'yellow peril' to 'model minority' to the 'Chinese virus'.
