After serving as an Assistant District Attorney in Brooklyn, Martin Karopkin became Inspector General at the New York City Parks Department and then at the New York City Fire Department. He went on to serve in the New York State Courts for 20 years as a Judge of the Criminal Court, acting Judge of the Family Court and acting Justice of the Supreme Court. 

He became an International Judge with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo in 2004. In 2006 he was appointed as Deputy Commissioner for Trials at the New York City Police Department (NYPD). Shortly after starting there, he was given a position as Judge with the Extraordinary Chambers of the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), in Cambodia, which he accepted on a part-time basis until 2008. In October 2014 he returned to Cambodia to serve, on a full time basis, as a Reserve Judge of the Trial Chamber at the ECCC.

At present Judge Karopkin is on standby at the ECCC available to address any residual issues that may arise.
