Dear Brothers, Sisters, & Siblings,
 
Richard P. McCullyIt is with a heavy heart we inform you that our Brother Judge Richard P. McCully passed away May 21st after a courageous battle with cancer. Judge McCully’s involvement and dedication in P.A.D. spanned over 50 years.

During law school, Rick founded P.A.D.'s McKellar Chapter at the University of Memphis School of Law, served as its charter Justice, and attended his first Convention in 1966 as a McKellar Chapter delegate. As a 3L, Brother McCully served as a Student Assistant to Phi Alpha Delta's Supreme Justice and visited struggling chapters, which later culminated in his post-graduation employment as the first full-time P.A.D. Executive Secretary.

Judge McCully graduated from the University of Memphis with a B.S. in 1965 and a J.D. in 1968. Additionally, he held an M.P.A. from the University of Tennessee and attended the FBI National Law Institute in 1991. In 1998, the University of Miami President conferred Honorary Alumnus status on him and in 2004 he was tapped for the Iron Arrow Society, the highest honor one can attain at the University of Miami.

The Judge served the Fraternity as a District Justice, Acting District Justice, and a resource person to countless International Officers. He served on two Executive Director search committees, was the chair of the Convention nominating committees twice, and attended 20 Conventions.

At the 1998 Convention in Phoenix, he was inducted into P.A.D.’s Distinguished Service Chapter, our Fraternity’s highest honor. At the 2000 Convention, he was elected to the International Executive Board as an International Board Member-at-Large. He was elected Chief Tribune at the 2014 Convention and was elected again at the 2016 Convention.

After high school, Rick served in the United States Navy and served in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary for 50 years, receiving the Auxiliary Sustained Service Award and a Unit Citation during Operation Desert Storm for augmenting the regular Coast Guard units.

Brother McCully was appointed as a United States Administrative Law Judge for the Northern District of Georgia in 1994, until his retirement in 2017. Prior thereto, he was a partner in a Fort Lauderdale law firm, representing police departments and insurance defense clients. Rick also served as a prosecutor in both Fort Lauderdale and Nashville. While practicing in both cities, he was instrumental in the establishment of P.A.D. alumni chapters in each.

Judge McCully is survived by his wife Janet, his daughter Colleen Stephens (Christopher), two grandsons Jacob and Luke Stephens of Ft. Payne, Alabama, three stepchildren Christopher Carr of Dunwoody, Dr. Sarah Carr Evans of Sandy Springs, Georgia, Toby Carr of Watkinsville, Georgia, their spouses, and seven step-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Maureen McCully Winograd of New York City and Estero, Florida. 

A visitation will be held Friday, May 26, 6-8pm at HM Patterson & Son - Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, in Atlanta. The funeral mass will be Saturday, May 27, at 10:30am at All Saints Catholic Church in Dunwoody. Burial will be Tuesday May 30, at 1pm at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia, with full military honors.

Are you interested in mentoring law students?

This is a reminder that the mentor application period is open for the 2023-2024 law student cycle of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity's G.O.L.D. (Growing Our Leadership Diversity) Program. Applications are due by Tuesday, May 31, 2023. This program cycle will begin in July 2023 and end in May 2024.
Please read on if you are looking to help P.A.D. provide members of diverse backgrounds with the leadership skills to take on additional leadership roles in P.A.D. and in the legal profession.

MENTORS NEEDED
We are now seeking mentors for the 2023-2024 class of approximately 10-20 law students who:
  • Possess an identity, intersectionality, and/or demographics that can offer a unique perspective when working with students of diverse backgrounds 
  • Have time to commit approximately 1-3 hours per month between July 2023 and May 2024; and
  • Are currently in a legal or law-adjacent career.

PROGRAM DETAILS
Dates: July 2023 - June 2024
Location: Predominantly virtual with optional attendance to the International Executive Board Meeting in Chicago, IL this August and/or the 2024 Law School Mock Trial Competition hosted in Arlington, VA next February.

Mentor Application Period Open
We are excited to announce that Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International (P.A.D.) has launched the second cycle of the G.O.L.D. (Growing Our Leadership Diversity) Program. This cycle will begin in July 2023 and end in May 2024.

Through this program, law students will build upon their existing skills to become better leaders, foster relationships with other leaders in P.A.D. through a formal mentoring program, and benefit from a moderated leadership assessment to gain insight into personal and group management styles, identify strengths, and adapt to weaknesses.
Please read on if you are looking to help P.A.D. provide members of diverse backgrounds with the leadership skills to take on additional leadership roles in P.A.D. and in the legal profession.

The Phi Alpha Delta Law School Mock Trial Competition will be back in 2023 for our 15th annual event. We look forward to welcoming 28 teams from across the country that will compete for a spot in the final rounds. You can be a part of this exciting event by volunteering to judge!

 

  • Location: Hilton Arlington in Arlington, VA
  • Competition Dates: Thursday, February 23 - Saturday, February 25, 2022; view the full round schedule on the Mock Trial Event page.
  • Requirement to Judge: Must be admitted to a state bar or be a faculty member. No other experience necessary!
Whether you live in the area or are looking for a P.A.D. get-away, this is a great way to rekindle the fraternal spirit and help your fraternal siblings in law school hone their trial advocacy skills.

Competition rounds will run all day Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25. The time commitment per round is about three hours. All participants will be placed in a “waiting room” and will be granted access upon verification.

Over the past few months, the IEB has been pleased to see more and more of our key volunteers join our monthly Board Meetings. To ensure that Board Meetings run smoothly, the format of the Zoom meeting will change slightly to allow for an orderly meeting. Please note that you will be muted upon entry to the meeting.

If you would like to be heard during a specific portion of the meeting for which the International Justice or other Board Member is chairing the meeting, the IEB will be adhering to the following procedure:

  1. Members wishing to be heard, should raise their hand using the "raise hand" feature in Zoom. For more information on how to "raise your hand" within the Zoom platform, please click here.
  2. The International Marshal will keep track of those members who have raised their hands and report to the Board Member chairing that portion of the meeting that a hand has been raised.
  3. Once the Board Member chairing that portion of the meeting acknowledges that a given member can speak, the International Marshal will unmute that person.
  4. Once the member has been heard, the International Marshal will mute that person again.
