WHO CAN WE RECRUIT?
A pre-law member is defined in the Fraternity Policy Manual as "Any member of the administration, faculty, or any student in good standing at any institution of higher learning where a pre-law chapter of this Fraternity is chartered."
Pre-law chapters are encouraged to welcome new members of all class levels (freshmen through seniors) and of any major. The purpose of P.A.D.'s Pre-Law Program is to help students interested in pursuing a legal education and career make an educated decision about going to law school.
Pre-law chapters may also recruit students in graduate programs on campus (for example, those obtaining a masters degree in criminal justice, business, etc.). Please note that all students pursuing their LLM or JD should join the campus' P.A.D. Law Chapter.
Recruitment is not only an opportunity to grow our fraternity and welcome thousands of new brothers and sisters each semester, but it is vital to P.A.D.'s continued livelihood. New members are the future of our fraternity; they could soon be your chapter's next slate of officers, the next member to attend Pre-Law Conference, join P.A.D. in law school and attend Convention, or even become a District Justice as an alum, then serve on P.A.D.'s International Board. New members foster growth, bring new ideas and methods to operations, and establish new bonds in our brother/sisterhood.
How is recruitment applicable to life after pre-law? Many practices require attorneys to find their own clients. This is especially true if you are a sole practitioner. During P.A.D. recruitment, you learn how to speak with individuals in a professional, yet persuasive manner. This is a necessary skill to possess when you have to look for clients or sell your case to a jury.
Not sure how to promote P.A.D. to potential new members? Think back to when you became a member of P.A.D. What were the main reasons you joined the Fraternity? While the underlying reason was most likely an interest in the law, most people join P.A.D. because someone asked them to. This is the simplest, and yet most forgotten, element of effective recruitment. At some point during the recruitment process, the recruiter/officers need to specifically ask someone to fill out an application, pay the initiation fee, and JOIN!
