Truman Chapter: Honorary Initiation of Hon. Charles W. Johnson

Join Phi Alpha Delta, Truman Chapter on October 10, 2013, at 6:00 p.m. at Seattle University School of Law, room C5, for the induction of Washington State Supreme Court Associate Chief Justice, Charles W. Johnson, as an Honorary Member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International.

After the formal initiation and honorary initiation, there will be a reception at the School of Law that will have complimentary hors d'oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages. Following the reception, we will be heading to The Chieftain, where we will have a space reserved to continue celebrating the new membership in Truman Chapter.

Any person who has attained unusual distinction in the legal profession or in the field of law at least a statewide basis shall be eligible for honorary membership into Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International. The term “field of law” shall embrace any person elected or appointed to a legislature or engaged in the execution, administration, or enforcement of the law, whether or not such person is a member of the legal profession.

Justice Johnson has attained such distinction many times over. From 1995-2010, he taught as an adjunct professor at Seattle University School of Law, teaching comprehensive courses in state constitutional law, constitutional law, legal writing, and oral advocacy. Justice Johnson also participates regularly in law-related activities, such as co-chairing the Washington State Minority and Justice Commission, and chairing the Task Force on Civil Equal Justice Funding. He has been presented numerous awards for his service, including the Star Award, the Liberty Bell Award, and the Public Service Award, to name a few.

For Truman Chapter, Justice Johnson hosts a group of members every year at the Supreme Court of Washington for an afternoon-long tour of the Court. During the visit, Justice Johnson explains the Court's history, what it is like to be a Justice, and even a few fun "war stories" from his time on the bench. He has always been a welcoming asset to Truman Chapter, openly inviting questions and discussion on issues brought up during the visits.

Recently, in August of 2012, Justice Johnson was awarded the John J. McAulay Legal Educator award for his extensive and generous service to Phi Alpha Delta. He was presented the award at the 2012 Phi Alpha Delta District I Leadership Conference, where he gave a heartfelt acceptance speech and encouraged District I to continue its pursuit in providing opportunities for law students and lawyers to have a social outlet that lets them develop a sense of camaraderie and give back to the community.

We hope to see you there!
